Toxic Chemical Smell
I am active duty, and the heels in my regulation boots are too worn to wear even another day. I can retire in a few months and didn't want to spend a couple hundred on new boots, so decided to try these. The size is equivalent to my regular boots, and they fit well and are comfortable (unlike Rothco which are so big, I couldn't even guess what size to order). They are shorter than regulation and the shoe strings don't wrap around the top so you can tuck them in, but they work. However, these boots smell like some sort of chemical weapon, so I washed them in the washing machine with detergent and Borax, then left them in the sun for a week. They actually held up under this and still look new, but the smell didn't go away. I wore them to work today, and am getting a headache from the chemical smell, so decided to research if Chinese fake leather is toxic. Guess what? Lots of nasty chemicals that are banned in other countries, and that can be carcinogenic, cause anemia and immune disorders, and body heat seems to activate the chemical reaction. The boots are now in the corner, I am in my socks, and the boots will go in the trash as soon as I get home. I wasted money, instead of saving.
