An extremely loose adaptation of fan fiction
Wheel of Time - Prime series review. (Spoilers) I am a huge fan of the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan. I started reading the series in the 1990 when "Eye of the World" was published and finished it when the 14th book "A Memory of Light" was published in 2013. I have read them all 5 or 6 times and listened on Audible another dozen or so times. I was very excited when Prime announced they were going to make a Wheel of Time Series. I watched the first 3 episodes last night and have to say I was entertained, but extremely disappointed at the same time. I get that you have to adapt books for screen, however to change their core is just wrong. Here is where the spoilers come in. First what I liked: 1. While the Two Rivers isn't exactly a diverse people ("noone ever leaves the Two Rivers") since they are all from the Two Rivers with Rand being a stand out with his red hair. I think they are doing a decent job with casting. The actors that were cast as each character so far have been what I was expecting with todays "inclusive" adaptations. 2. The story in the books takes place when they are in their teens, but the series has them being 20. I think this is a good thing since it gets away from the coming of age story it could have been. 3. It's an entertaining story for the most part and the live action fights are done well albeit just not enough of them. 4. Some of the scenery is amazing. What was okay: 1. The CGI is not great. The Trolocks are awkward. 2. The wolves just look like they all have mange. 3. Edmonds Field while not what I pictured is okay. 4. Weaving: I'm okay with how they did this since you need t show it in some way. Saidar is meh and Saidin is okay What just plain sucked: 1. This is not an adaptation of Robert Jordans story: It's a rewrite of bad fan fiction by those that have not read the books. Basically the 6th season of GOT 2. 4 Taverin? WHAT? Egwene is not Taverin. Moraigne didnt even know the boys were until Loail points it out later. 3. Perrin isnt the same character as in the book. Book Perrin is very innocent and thoughtful. He hated to kill and only did so when forced to. He even threw away his axe the first time he enjoyed using it. When he meets and falls in love with Faile he is willing to throw everything away for that love. The Prime Perrin isn't thoughtful, innocent or likeable. He's just there. I have no idea why he's married to a blacksmith. He kills her? WTF is wrong with Prime. 4. Abell Cathoun is a Lecher? Mat's mom is a drunk? This is a ridiculous bad rewrite. 5. Mat is a garbage human being? Sure the book has him as a trickster, but the Prime series has him as a thief, criminal and coward: He literally lets his eye be ripped out of his face to save his friends and Moraine in the books. Mat is a man of honor and duty in the books which is the exact opposite of the Series Mat. 6. The Dragon Reborn can be a girl now? The reason the Dragon Reborn is so feared is that he WILL go mad and break the world again. 7. Episode 4, 5 and 6 have nothing to do with the books at all. 8. You need the power to use the ways? Poor choice since later Perrin and others use the ways to travel. Loail guides Perrin and Faile home. I guess Faile is going to be an Aes Sedai? Over All: This is not the story of the book in anything other than at its basic good versus evil with the same character names. You may be entertained but do not think you are getting Robert Jordan's Masterpiece. I wonder if the showrunners even read the books. As it is it's bad fan fiction from people that have said they are not fans of Jordan's gender roles.
