Not an book about Ursula at all
I knew that this book was part of the Villains series by Serena but I had wrongly assumed that they weren't connected. I thought each story was it's own thing and I would be okay reading the third book-take my advice-don't do that. I'm so disappointed with this book that I could have cried while reading it. The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie, so I was super excited to have a book about Ursula. How cool to have a book expanding on Ursula's life. But starting this book, I was dismayed to realize that it's not about Ursula at all. In fact, she hardly shows up at all. It's mostly about these three witches that are the author's invention and the fact that their sister disappeared. Then it's also about some princess called Princess Tulip (which, I'm sorry, it sounds ridiculous) and her nanny. Oh, plus it's about a cat that has the same name as the author's cat. But it's absolutely not about Ursula. Maybe it would make more sense if I started with book one but I think even I would still dislike it. My frustration is that in all the book descriptions, there absolutely no mention of these other characters. It makes me mad to be duped by the publishers. Disney villains have a lot of potential and you don't need to have these extra characters. It's like you have the approval of Disney and this is where you go with it? I feel the author didn't know what to do with the story and the characters of The Little Mermaid are under-developed. She makes Triton into an almost evil character and we learn nothing more about Ariel. There are pages where the author just repeats lines from the movie-like pretty much the whole "Poor Unfortunate Souls" lyrics. You really don't learn much about Ursula. Most of this book consists of three witches wondering why their sister, Circe, abandoned them. Again, maybe it was my mistake for reading the third book first. I actually have the first book but I wanted to read Ursula's story because she's my favorite villain. I'm just so disappointed and it may be awhile before I do read the first book in the series.
