Absolutely terribly quality.
I'm a leatherworker. I've made bags. I understand the chemical composition of various types of leather, and how long each should last. The people who made this back weren't even trying. ****I bought this bag intending to reinforce it, but believe me.... It can't be saved.**** The leather is the cheapest crap you can buy. I put a laptop and few office supplies inside this and put it on... Ten pounds at most. The strap tore through before I even made it to campus.
The problem is that the leather is not reinforced in the right areas. The loop that connects the straps to the back (AHEM... the place where all the weight is going to pull) was a 2mm piece of cheap leather. It was sewn to the back using a sewing machine and cotton thread. The PROBLEM with this is that when you stitch leather so closely, it perforates the leather, INVITING it to tear. (See picture)
This problem could be easily fixed by reinforcing the loop with canvas. I'm shocked they didn't do that. It could also be helped by spacing the stitches farther apart and using artificial sinew, like you should when working with leather.
Further Cons:
- the bag is very uncomfortable, at least when you put a laptop in it.
- the leather varies in thickness. In some places, it's thick (probably 6mm) but in other places it's almost paper thin. (See picture of the pocket being held open to see the variation in thickness on either side of the pocket). Pros:
- the leather is very soft. I liked the natural texture on it, and was very sad it sucked in so many other ways, because it was definitely pretty.
- many pockets!
- zippers were cool. I didn't think they were absurdly cheap, like other reviewers have mentioned. They looked fine to me.
Very disappointed. But Amazon was great! I requested a return, which they approved immediately. They paid return shipping, and within 24 hours I had a different backpack on my doorstep. =) . This is a sign of extremely poor quality control, both wherever they're buying the leather from and with the bag makers themselves.
- The top strap of the backpack attaches on the front pocket.... It causes the front pocket to wrinkle up in a weird way. =( This disappointed me. It would work way better if the strap connected to the bottom of the back, instead of the pocket. (Picture attached)
- glue residue left where they attached the zippers. (Picture attached)
- weird dirty marks all over the back? Not really sure what was up with that. (Picture attached)
- Pencil marks all over the leather. (Picture attached) Maybe you could erase it off? I didn't think to try before I sent it back.
