★☆☆☆☆
Avoid this blatant sexualization of women!
I wish I could give negative stars. The main characters are high school students and the reading audience is high school students. This book perpetuates and romanticizes sexual aggression, bullying and stereotypes. . . A secondary character drugs someone with the intentions of date rape, and his punishment by the main characters is public humiliation and a fist fight. Sexual violence is a problem among young adults and this is the solution we want to portray as appropriate? . . I only wish public humiliation and/or a fist fight would stop the date rapers. . . Twins pass around the same girl unbeknownst to her . . . Really? And this a good idea when?. . . even for adults this a morally questionable act! Teenage bullies run the high school and the family . . . sexual harassment is portrayed as boys will be boys. And the dad . . . sex in front of the teenage boys . . . great idea . . . Bringing these difficult topics out in the open is a great service to high school students. . . but showing them that sexual harassment and bullying are OK and that the solution to date rape does not involve prosecution adds to the damaging sexualization messages sent to teenage girls by the media and popular culture.
