Possibly the Worst Trilogy Ending I've Ever Read
I eagerly anticipated this release, counting down the days. I grabbed it as soon as I was able and cleared my entire evening to devour it. My daughter and I loved the first 2 books. Are they the best written? No, but the story was good and the characters were engaging so that made them worthwhile reads.
Starting early on in the book, I realized that the author seemed to have lost the "voice" of the story, the voice she used to tell the first 2 installments had disappeared. Of course this can happen; authors grow and their voices often become more refined. Not so with this book. It was as if she had become bored with the story herself and just wanted to get it over with as quickly and conveniently as possible. Several opportunities were presented for some interesting story developments and then just simply glossed over, kind of like the author thought, "Well, I toyed with going in this direction but it would take too much work. Let's just forget I ever brought that up." That is frustrating.
As I moved on through the story, I stopped worrying about what had happened to the author's voice and started wondering what had happened to her mind. What was she thinking as she wrote this? How could she possibly believe this would be a satisfying ending to the story? Does she really think that the way the story ends leaves us wanting more from her? A good trilogy often ends right where you don't want it to, on the cusp of new, wonderful adventures, possibilities unfolding, plenty of room for your imagination to wander. This trilogy ended with every door you hoped might remain open sealed shut. Tobias is becoming a politician? Are you kidding me? A politician? I couldn't care less what happens from this day forward to any of the characters. Tris is dead. Tobias has gone into politics. The rest have suffered similar, miserable fates. Who wants to imagine what will become of any of them?
Ms. Roth, you lost it. Maybe you lost interest in your own story. Maybe you lost your voice. Maybe you lost your mind. But one thing you have most certainly lost is a fan and the other reviews make it clear that I'm not the only one. Now there's a movie coming out in the spring. Who cares about that? About the only thing I care about right now is that memory serum. Anyone have a spare vial around? I'd like to forget I started reading this trilogy in the first place.
