UH OH! UPDATE
Second jar came with a one inch layer of brown on the bottom. Wasn't even opened ever! As a matter of fact it was sealed so tight I couldn't even get the lid open. I have provided pictures. My review of coconut oil stands and I have also started cooking with it. But as far as ordering it without being able to see it I won't do that again. Walmart offers same pricing as Amazon and I can see that it is all creamy white, nothing brown that shouldn't be there.
I did call Viva Labs to let them know and their customer service had absolutely no idea why it would be brown on the bottom. And apparently had never heard this complaint from any customers even though Amazon customers routinely complain about the moldy color issue in the reviews. So disappointing. I still like this coconut oil best and have not found one I like better even though trying hard to do so. But the fact remains if I get a discolored jar of coconut oil I can't use it. Too many reviewers have complained too many times for me to ever try ordering it on line again and I have been unable to find this brand at the large superstores. If I find this brand on a store shelf and it is creamy white all of the way through I will buy it in a heartbeat.
So far I have only used this as a body lotion and face moisturizer with amazing results. My really dry winter skin soaked it up like a thirsty sponge. Even the next day my legs were still so soft. As a moisturizer it made my face very soft and smooth. It made my many wrinkles look much smoother when it was on my face. It takes some time to rub into your face completely so I haven't tried putting makeup on after using it yet. But I did put makeup on the next day and thought it looked quite nice. My face seemed a little brighter to me.
I put a teaspoon in my coffee. It is supposed to help with a myriad of things from constipation to weight loss to eczema. We will see.
One thing I notice is that many people who are having a hard time with mold most often seem to use it for their hair and skin. If a drop of water gets in or even steam say goodbye to the oil and hello to mold. Since reading that before I received my first jar I use two separate containers. I scooped a bunch out and put it into a tin ( glass jar especially dark is supposed to work well too) to use with my fingers as moisturizer, lip balm , cuticle softener etc...the larger amount I left in its container, in a powder room cupboard without the shower or stove to steam it up. I only use this for cooking and use only a utensil. I make sure the utensil is COMPLEYELY dry so as not to cause mold. After using the spoon I immediately put the lid back on and put it right back in the cupboard. Now if mine turns moldy we will know the problem is not the user. But so far so good.
Im going to start cooking with it next.
UPDATE: knees and elbows are really sore. Low thyroid gives fibromyalgia like pain and unbelievably I noticed when rubbing it on my skin the coconut oil alleviated the pain completely for the next 24 hours or so. So I started making it a point daily to really rub it into knees and elbow area and it makes a tremendous difference usually in about 15 minutes to a half hour max. My mom then tried it on her knee (replacements) and also for a pinched nerve causing sciatica for the last 4 months and also had amazing results with both areas as well. She did it before bed and woke up so much better she could hardly believe it. Read about it working for inflammation and arthritis so figured I had nothing to lose. What a wonderful relief. It worked well on my fingers when arthritis flared up a bit. After rubbing the oil in I never though about my fingers again until the next day when I realized how quickly they had felt better.
Also used it as the oil for the grill for hamburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches and both tasted great. Especially the grilled cheese. Not greasy at all. Tasted great. Hamburger might have been a tish greasier not positive but nice taste. Salted it as well. I'm trying to get a lot into me for added benefits!!
Will update if I do more with it. (Which based on these results so far I think I probably will.)
Oh my gosh!! Cooked both cod and salmon with it and not only did the cod not shrink but both fishes tasted wonderful. Sauted the in a pan on the stove in about 2 or 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and it was out of this world. Took less than 10 minutes, 4 or 5 on each side. I don't know where this has been all of my life!!
