She Ain't Ready
I've read most of the reviews which are split between rapture (70%) and total horror (30%). I'd have to agree this is a horrible album and Charlotte's handlers should be whipped to within an inch of their lives. They've depended on having a pretty young girl with a slight, pretty, extremely green voice to wow the public. Back in the dark ages of my life when I was in college I used to accompany vocal students on piano on this type of reportoire and there were 19, 20, and 21 year olds who weren't ready to sing this stuff. Charlotte is nowhere near their level. I'll grant she'll probably mature and maybe she's got the artistic hide to tough it out but we'll see. But Charlotte singing "Can't Help Loving that Man of Mine?" Puh-----leeze! And trying to be a seductive, burning, sultry Carmen in the "Habanera". Double Puh-----leeze!! And all the other songs? Triple Puh-------leeze. Charlotte has a sound to all of her singing that's just grating and she needs to work on her enunciation. She sounds like she listened to her voice teacher about how to produce beautiful words and tone but she doesn't get it totally when she actually puts it into practice. (Yes, she is a young Sarah Brightman. Awful diction.) She needs her heart broken about twenty times with serious love affairs to even start approaching the maturity to begin singing those songs. If you saw the last 60 Minutes on December 2, 2001 with Barbara Cook, you saw Barbara giving master classes and stopping serious Broadway-type voice students after one or two notes and correcting them on interpretation; 19 and 20 year olds. She knew after hearing those one or two notes if those students had anything in their souls to back up a pretty voice. I have a feeling she would have listened to Charlotte for one or two notes, stopped her and given her an encouraging pat on the fanny and said "go home, kid" and grow up a little and I'll see you in five years."
I give this thing two stars instead of one because there is the surface glossiness that all the positive reviewers are responding to. Might as well be generous for all the backup talent.
