Unreliable, better off with the Snuza
For a product that is supposed to provide peace of mind this did the opposite. After bringing our newborn home from the hospital I felt some relief knowing that the owlet would monitor her breathing while we were sleeping. That was until the “6-8 lb” sock didn’t fit our 7.5 lb baby at all and kept giving alarms for sock placement. There’s nothing that sleep deprived paranoid new parents love more than being woken up repeatedly to the most annoying alarm to find out the device they are trusting to watch their baby is not working again. I reached out to customer service at that point and got no response. As her foot got bigger the fit got a little better and we got less alarms so I continued use. Half the time I look at the app it tells me she is wiggling and it cannot get a reading. I look over at my baby and she is dead still in a bassinet that isn’t moving, but ok, she’s wiggling? Makes me wonder how much of the night she is not getting readings because I’m not exaggering it is seriously half the time that I look at the app it says that. I don’t like the app. It’s very slow to open, connect to the base station, and give you a reading, even when I have just gone out of the app for one second and come right back. My daughter has had several false red alarms where I freaked out and jolted her awake to have her look like I was completely crazy. She is breathing fine and her heart rate are fine. Again, nothing that sleep deprived paranoid new parents love more than false alarms telling them their baby isn’t breathing. Reading online this is apparently pretty common. I’ve also had the stupid song wake me up repeatedly to say the base station couldn’t get a reading from the sock when the sock was literally a foot away from it. Do not plan on having the base station in a different room than the baby. Tonight was really the icing on the cake when I opened the app before bed time to see my baby’s readings only to see a message from owlet that they were having difficulties with the app and although the owlet was working, I should not expect the app to work. That was really fun when we got a 3am red alert and had no idea what it was for since the app still wasn’t working. Let me be clear that I am that person that actually reads the instructions and I did so before she was born from cover to cover, making sure I understood everything before she was born and I repeated this after she was born because I thought it was important. This isn’t for lack of effort or knowledge on my part, this is just a really bad product. For something that was supposed to give us reassurance, this has done nothing but make us more paranoid. We will be attempting to return this, if we even can at this point, and we will be going with the good old fashioned Snuza. Update: I also wanted to add that it’s ridiculous how loud and bright the base station are when you turn them on and off. As mentioned the base station needs to be pretty much right next to the baby to work. There’s nothing like putting your sleeping baby down, finally, only to realize you need to turn the base station on and having it blast an annoying sound and brightly light up the room all night. I understand the alarms needing to be loud and bright, but why make a baby product designed to be used for sleep and make it so ridiculously loud and bright just to turn on? We even laid a washcloth over it to dim the light and it still lights up the entire room. Poor design all around. I looked on the app to see if this was adjustable and it was not as far as I could tell. Second update: Just when I thought the product couldn’t get any worse... my daughter gets a cold. Seems like the time you’d most want the owlet data, when you’re concerned about her breathing. We were getting readings of 85-86%, which is like, you need to go to the ER immediately levels. Since she has a cold, we thought they were real numbers and started to freak out. We call our doctor who says, put the monitor on yourself. Shocker, we got the same readings, on both me and my husband. The doctor said, you have a bad o2 monitor, the battery is probably bad. If they were real numbers she would be restless and probably blue, not sleeping peacefully. So, with 4 months of use, this product has worn out to the point of giving inaccurate readings that nearly sent us all to the ER. It had been charging all day, should have been fully charged. Reducing the rating to one star. I can usually find something positive to say about even the worst of products, but not this one. Seriously, skip it. I wouldn’t get it again if they were paying me to take it. It has done nothing but cause us more stress and paranoia.
