HOW OLD IS THE BATTERY I GOT?
I purchased this battery from Amazon a while ago. I inserted it into my UPS and plugged it into the wall to charge, turned off, and without any hardware attached to it. It was out of sight and I didn’t get back to it for a couple of months.
My wife noticed a hum coming from the UPS a few weeks back, and unplugged it without my knowledge.
I discovered that it was unplugged this week and plugged it back in to charge. After an hour, I heard a constant hum coming from the other room and discovered that it was the UPS. I pressed the on/off button and was greeted with a loud tone and flashing light; indicating that the battery was dead.
I removed the battery and discovered that it was bloating on both ends and on top. Bad sign for wet-cell batteries. So I called APC.
They asked for pictures of the battery, attached, and the invoice. I emailed both to them. They also requested me to read the model and product numbers associated with their bar codes on the battery’s label. I did see any.
They told me that newer batteries have bar codes on them with these numbers. The original battery that came with my 2011 UPS does have a sticker with the bar codes. The picture with 2 batteries- the battery on the right, is the 2011 original battery. the battery on the left is the battery I purchased in January of 2017 from Amazon.
If you purchase a battery online, check for a bar code sticker. If it doesn’t have one… beware.
