NOT Louisa May Alcott's Little Women
All the negative reviews about this movie seem to focus on the directors choice to tell the story out of sequence. That was an odd choice in my opinion since the power of this story comes from watching these characters grow, develop, and change. I'm not sure what the director thought was gained from telling it non-sequentially. However, that is not my biggest problem with this film. Spoiler alert. The choice to not have Jo marry Frederich in the end is outrageous and unforgivable. If the director has such a limited view of feminism as to think that a woman cannot be smart, strong, talented, independent AND fall in love and get married - that is her problem. But to take a beloved literary classic and twist the work of another artist by drastically changing the fate of the main character to fit the directors point of view, or to make some socio-political statement is just arrogant and ignorant. If the director didn't want to tell the story of Little Women, she should have chosen some other story to tell. This is not just a director relating her version of a classic story, this is a director thinking she knows how to tell the story better than Louisa May Alcott. I can assure you, she does not.
