Adoptive Parents please read before this movie freaks you out
For anyone thinking about adopting, please don't believe that this has to be your adoption story. As a child of interracial international adoption, I really couldn't see myself in this story. Not every adopted child feels the loss of birth parents. This woman and I are almost the exact same age and adopted from Korea to non-Asian families. I cannot relate to any of her angst. Not every adopted child wonders or wants to know his or her birth parents. Everyone assumes you do or should but I have never. Others have told me it would be different if I had my own biological child. Well, I did and it didn't stir any feelings to want to know my birth mother. For those who say carrying a child creates a bond between mother and child like no other discounts the bond between fathers to their children. The woman in the movie obsesses about looking like your parents. Well many biological children do not look like their parents. She obsesses about being made fun of for being Asian but I would argue that overweight or less attractive or poor or learning disabled (the list could go on and on) can suffer equal childhood trauma. Children can ruthless little savages with the empathy of a serial killer. It's a wonder any of us make it out of childhood with mental stability. Some people seem born with better innate coping skills. My feeling is even if this woman had been raised in Korea with her biological parents, she would still have difficulty coping with life. She blames adoption because it is convenient to her narrative. I have no bitterness towards my biological parents and appreciate the chance at the best possible life. I have no curiosity about them and live my life secure with the parents who raised me. Btw my dad is black and mom is white so they do not look like me at all. Once again, no insecurity about that. They are my parents, not perfect, but my parents nonetheless and that is enough for me. Future adopters, you can make your own narrative that looks nothing like the one presented in this movie. Also not every child from another country is in love with the idea of learning "their culture." Please do not force a lot of language and culture down their throats just because someone else tells you it is the "right" thing to do. Look how many first generation american born children abandon their immigrant roots. Do what meets your child's needs not what a book or "expert" tells you. Let their interests and desires guide you.
