★★☆☆☆
Beautiful cinematography, pointless plot
An isolated castle in the middle of Tuscany serves as the backdrop for what I expected to be an enjoyable 90 minute gothic escape. It was all there - the widower pining after his late wife, her presence evident in the house through photos and memoirs, and the eerie silence of a little boy who refuses to speak, and who thinks he hears his deceased mother's voice through the walls. Combine that with actors such as Martin Csokas and Emilia Clarke, and this should have been a fantastic movie. Then why was I checking the time 45 minutes into it, groaning when i discovered i still had 45 minutes to go? I kept waiting and waiting for something to happen, but there was no apparent plot, and only a minor twist (if you could call it that) at the very end of the movie. It wasn't a twist major enough to encourage anyone to waste 1.5 hours on this, or to actually spend money on it. Very disappointing and only deserving one star, but I'll throw in a second for the cinematography, which is really quite stunning throughout.
