Review and Rebuttal?
"What I present here are my views." That from the preface to this angry screed. The fundamental premise is that Burns did not write and produce the documentary the author would have had he the intellect, experience, funding, and sources Burns had. His primary attacks on Burns throughout are not on the substance of what Burns has to say or Burns' sources, they criticize Burns for what he did NOT say or portray. He did not produce the documentary which suits this author's opinions and personal experience. Fine. Then find the funding, assemble the production staff, write the script, and produce your own documentary. If you want to know the origins and underbelly of the disaster that was Vietnam read Neil Sheehan's A Bright and Shining Lie. If you want to listen to a military retiree complain about what is not in a PBS documentary this is your book. The book, using that term very loosely, desperately needed a copy editor to save the author from producing something which only reflects his disabilities when it comes to writing. Ironically Ross, Sheehan, and the vast majority of others who have written on this subject agree the roots of this disaster lie in the politicians nor with the military. There was, however, an intersection of military and politicians where the culpable may be found. Save your money and your time; find a copy of any one of many better books on this subject.
