Brake designed to fall off unexpectedly
Originally, I LOVED this scooter. We've had three or four of them. My son, now 4, got his first two years ago and adores it.
However, two months ago, the brake came off seconds before my son went down a fairly steep hill. He was trying to slow down but was putting his foot where the brake should be and couldn't stop. Finally he bailed off the scooter, but it took him a while to figure out that he had to do that. Giving the scooter the benefit of the doubt, I ordered another one. Today as we were riding down the sidewalk, not going fast or doing anything strange, on a scooter only TWO MONTHS OLD, the brake just fell off again. Thank goodness both times my son was fine and wasn't needing to stop for a car or the end of a block.
I just spoke with the company and although they were very helpful and assured me that the brake could be easily replaced, they also told me that this is very likely to happen due to the way it's constructed. They believe that children "shouldn't need the brake" and if they do "they are going too fast". That's fine to say, but if a child is used to using one and trying to stop even at a regular speed as he/she approaches a street, the brake suddenly not being there is going to throw them. I wouldn't expect a four-year-old to have the presence of mind to figure out what to do in time to stop an accident.
Despite my love for this scooter, I am giving it up and going with a different brand. This is a recipe for complete and total disaster and I just hope they change their design before a child gets hurt.
This is the first review I've ever posted on amazon, and I only did it because I truly believe it could save a child's life. Please be careful with this scooter.
