Overheated and killed my fish...
I want to start off by saying I never write negative reviews, but I had to this time in hopes it helps someone else.
I used this in my 10 gallon tank with my betta. It had worked for several months beforehand, but I check on him daily. I checked him in the morning and the temperature was fine, around 86 or so. However, when I returned at night (12 hours later), it was over 100 degrees. My beloved pet was dead and the heater was sizzling when I yanked it out of the water. If it breaks, it won't just stop working -- it can overheat extremely to the point it will kill just about any fish, even tropical ones.
If you have a heater like this, you can lesson your chances of overheating by handling it with care. Never run it above water (if you have to remove it, unplug it first). But honestly, it's not worth the risk. Don't buy a cheap heater. Too much can go wrong. Spend the extra money and get one that's better made, and plug it into an alarm to be double-sure. It's not worth losing your animals over.
Please do what's best for your animals and keep them safe. I hope this can help someone else. I love my fish and wanted to keep them safe. I recommend you pay slightly more and keep your animals safe.
