Amateur Hour
This is a great project for practicing your hand finishing skills. Razor sharp burrs galore on every machined surface, including the cut edges of the jaw face plates. If I had tried to clamp something softer in the vise (like aluminum), the burrs would have dug into the surface and marred it. Plan on about an extra hour of inspecting and fooling with it to make it useable.
One of the face plate mounting screws didn't have threads adequately cut to the full depth (or the countersink is cut to deep), so the screw threads would bottom out before the face plate was snug. I chased the threads on a die, which seems to have resolved it (M6x1.0mm).
The bottom on mine is slightly out of flat, which is also annoying but less concerning than the abject lack of attention to detail on the machined surfaces.
I'm not expecting Starrett here... But if I wanted a Half Finished tool, I would have bought the Harbor Freight model for $10 less.
On the box - "IRWIN - Made in China to IRWIN Specifications."
Either your quality control is failing or your specifications are lacking. If this was my product, I would be embarrassed to show it to my own mother, let alone ship it to a customer..
