Would have been perfect if not for this one dealbreaker
I really wanted to like these. I bought the A50 after my Logitech G930s stopped working on my computer and from first impressions it seemed very well built and sounded good as well. The easy mic mute was something I had grown used to on my 930s and was happy to see it used here as well. Let me make this clear: If not for one CRITICAL FLAW in this headset, I would have given it five stars and kept it. Somehow I had managed to not see others mention it in reviews until I experienced it myself.
The Flaw:
As other people have mentioned, there is an incredibly distinct buzzing in the right ear when the mic picks up any noise during chat. This is something that has been well documented on their forums (google "astro a50 buzzing in right ear"), yet Astro claims it is "normal operation" and is caused by the wireless transmitter being too close to the right earcup. Basically, it seems like a problem in its inherent design, and I even tried replacing it with a new one only to have the exact same problem. Astro support suggests you play music and/or game sounds loud enough so you can't hear it. This doesn't work if you're using it for voice chat and nothing else is playing. I thought I would get used to it, but I cannot describe how distracting it is to start talking and hear this buzzing start up, and stop and it goes away.
TL;DR: Good headphones for gaming, sounds great, but cannot use for voice chat. Considering this is a $300 headSET, this is unacceptable.
