Next time shoot me to put me out of my reading misery, not the horse!
This book left me wondering why I ever read it. I kept hoping page after page that something uplifting or intriguing would happen. Nope. Nothing. My mind felt as abused as the blisters on her feet which she describes in detail on about every page. Not to ruin the plot, but here are some of the highlights as I can determine; Mom is dying of cancer and she is checking out the male nurses crotch, Mom dies so she has numerous sexual encounters to help relieve the pain, Mom dies so divorces her cuckold husband who she dearly loves, Mom dies so Cheryl picks the new surname "Strayed". "Adulterer" would have been more direct, Mom dies so she keeps hooking up with a heroin addict for sex and drugs, Mom dies so she had to shoot her mother's horse, Mom dies so she decides to hike the PCT and packs a lot of condoms just in case she runs into any hot smelly men, Mom dies and she finds she is pregnant with the addict's child and has an abortion, (This takes all of a sentence to happen. Too bad she didn't have all the condoms to use before this.) Mom dies, etc, etc. The only uplifting part of this book for me was the realization that anyone can be a professional writer with little or no skill. All you need to do is write a book of self pity in detail (if it happened nearly 2 decades ago and you have total recall all the better!) and get Oprah to pick it for her book club. Instant fame and money can be awaiting you too.
