Unreliable, poorly built, poor service, Warrentee not honored
6 weeks after installation my generac "on-demand" powered on for its weekly 12 min test and did not shut off. I frequently travel and did not discover this until 8 days....and a $360 gas bill....later. Generac did replace the faulty circuitboard, but required I pay a service fee for the visit.
Fast forward 6 months, the generator began to shut down during its weekly test, giving a low oil pressure alert. I was first told that this was normal (the oil is so low the generator won't run, after 6 months and only 2 hrs of run time. They also stated that they did not replace the circuitboard on the earlier visit, but said it was a loose wire from my electrician install. When I produced paperwork from the service technician showing the board replacement, I was told that the owners manual requires a shut down and cool off after 24 hrs of continuous use, and since it had run 7 days due to the faulty circuitboard and I was not present to shut it down, I had voided my warrantee due to "neglect". All this while a simple Google search for "generac low oil pressure switch" will yield that these units have endemically faulty oil pressure switches!
Finally, since when does 8 month old equipment go low on oil "normally" after 160hrs of run time? Where did it go? Burnt or leaked? Either way, shouldn't happen for $5000!!
So, it seems, with a generac generator, you must be present at all times to observe its function and be prepared to intervene. And this company will go to ANY lengths to get out of honoring a warrantee.
Save you money. You might not have peace of mind, but you won't have that anyway, and you'll still have your money.
