a good plot is not enough
If I had read only the first two books, I would most likely have given them a 4 or possibly a 5 rating. However, the more I read. the more obvious it was that Mr. Lister has thrust himself into much of the modern detective writing. That is, a good plot is not enough. The feeling seems to be that gratuitous explicit sex is required and the murders must be more heinous than that used by other other writers. The killings and the aftermath also require minute descriptions. Much of the language used by some of he characters are pretty much limited to the use of "F: word.. Such use does not happen just in the prison scenes. John Jordan could be a great character even if he is an oversexed cleric. I read all sorts of novels including those of the past. I love Nero Wolfe, Philo Vance, Perry Mason, Philip Marlowe etc. Their authors managed good stories without the degradation used too much today. Heck Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer was thought to be outrageous when those stories first came out. Today, the stories would not make a ripple. No more of Mr. Lister's novels for me,
