From Excitement to Extreme Dissapointment
15 years ago I was actually an authorized dealer for Invicta Watches. This particular line of Invicta Watches, with the Swiss 26 jewel movement, was always a very high quality watch, so I finally decided to purchase one for myself. I already own many other watches from Invicta's lineup, ranging from basic quartz based watches through several of their 21 jewel automatic models. The 9937 is effectively touted as Invicta's highest quality automatic diver's watch, and I was excited to receive it.
Upon opening the box, I was slightly disappointed, as the packaging didn't seem to be the quality that I was used to from years ago when I was a dealer. I actually thought the watch was used, as there were several small scratches, and the warranty card package was pressed awkwardly into the top of the watch box, and the paper was torn. It almost seemed as though it may have previously been a display unit somewhere. I would have returned it, but I was heading out of town and wanted to wear the watch while traveling, so I held onto it. Initially, everything seemed to be solid. With the exception of the aforementioned scratches, the build quality was very nice. The bracelet is nice and thick, the clasp snaps closed with a reassuring click, and the weight is perfectly balanced. Overall, the watch seemed very nice, so when I got back from my trip I decided to just keep it.
I've been wearing it for about 6 months now, and things have unfortunately gone downhill. While the bracelet and body of the watch have held up, the movement itself is highly questionable. It stops working all the time. Even after I just finished winding it, when I screw the crown back down the watch will lock up. I have to unscrew it and try again. Sometimes shaking it will free up the movement. I also own an automatic watch winder, and regardless of the setting I try, the movement still stops even while in the winder.
Just prior to the problems with my watch, I had decided to purchase my father one for his birthday, and when it arrived my suspicions about the packaging were confirmed. His watch box was much nicer, the watch was free of any scratches, the warranty card holder was in perfect condition, and overall things appeared to be perfect. However, as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by it's cover. Within three weeks his watch stopped working altogether. The second hand simply locks up and moves a few seconds forward, then a few seconds backward, then forward, etc... I have since returned it to Amazon.
I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the 9937 after now having purchased two of these watches. Unfortunately, do to the fact that I've had two bad experiences with this model of watch, I simply cannot recommend it.
* UPDATE: The watch has completely stopped working now. I'd give it zero stars, but one is the lowest it allows. This has happened to TWO of the 9937 watches pictured above. Very disappointing.
