Does It Keep Coffee As Hot As My Current Mug (Or, It's All About That Heat)
I did my own test to see if this Stanley Adventure Mug would keep liquids as warm as the brand of mug I have been using for probably about twelve years now, the Highwave MoJOEmo. (See attached picture.) First of all, I like the Stanley mug for many of its qualities: It seems sturdy; it is easy to clean; It has a handle that connects in two places. All of these are the characteristics I look for in a mug. But the most important question--and it all comes down to this--is "How long will it keep my coffee hot?" For my test, I filled both mugs up with 20 ounces of very hot water. (Twenty ounces filled each mug up to a comfortable "full" level, and they both seemed to have about the same amount of empty space between the water level and the lid.) I made sure the water was the same temperature in each mug before I secured the lids. Then I rested the mugs side by side on my kitchen counter and tested the temperature in each mug every thirty minutes for three hours, then did a final test after twelve hours. Note: The Highwave comes with an additional lid that screws on top of the first lid. This is to ensure the spillproofability of the mug and, I would assume, would also allow less heat to escape through the lid. I did NOT use this extra lid during this test, because I never use this lid in real life. The mug has been spillproof for me without this upper lid. Consistently, the Highwave MoJOEmo kept the water hotter throughout the test than did the Stanley Adventure Vacuum Wide Mug. At the end of three hours, the temperature of the water in the Highwave was still at 161 degrees (f), while the water in the Stanley had dropped to 145.8 degrees (f). Observations: From the beginning of the test, it was obvious to me that the Highwave mug would prevail. When I felt the lids, the Stanley's lid was hotter, indicating that it was losing more heat through the lid than was the Highwave. Other comparisons: The Stanley mug has a wider mouth. (This could also contribute to why it lost temperature faster than the Highwave.) The opening diameter to me serves no functional advantage or disadvantage. Perhaps the mug might be a little easier to clean with a wider mouth, but I've found no issues with the narrower opening of the Highwave. The lid that the Highwave MoJOEmo uses is both an advantage and a detraction. The Highwave's lid is more of a mechanical device, which serves to make the lid spillproof and to help keep heat from escaping. However, this lid is more difficult to clean, and, after time, I have needed to replace the lids by going to their website and ordering them. I use tons of creamer and sugar in my coffee, which, I'm sure attributes to why I need to replace the lids. Gunk can build up inside the mechanics of the lid, and can be difficult to remove. The Stanley's lid is a simple, single-layer lid (which allows more heat to escape), but it does fit snugly and provides spill protection that is as good as the Highwave. Final take: I am returning this Stanley Adventure Vacuum Wide Mug and will keep using the Highwave MoJOEmo mug, simply because it keeps my coffee significantly hotter for longer. The downside is that the lid on the Highwave is more high maintenance, and I have to replace it every ten months to a year. But it is that same lid that contributes to the heat retention of the mug, and keeping my coffee hotter longer is what is most important to me.
