could have been good
I have one of those Orbit 62032 4-Zone timers but the screen went and I bought one of these because of all in one 4-valve system.
The orbit was also a bit difficult to program BUT ***I could not use the Melnor because the programming flexibility is not good for lawns.****
I was disappointed as soon as I went to program it. The way the system works is completely different from the Orbit.
Orbit: The 4 zones will automatically trip off one after the other. Each zone can go from 0 to X minutes.
Melnor: The 4 zones are programmed completely independently. Each zone can go from 0-240 minutes.
Winner Orbit: One program takes care of all 4 zones
This was a deal breaker for me.
Orbit: A,B and C programs so 3 times a day. Program can run on any or multiple weekdays.
Melnor: One program time. Cycle can run every 2,3,4,5,6hrs OR 1st, 2nd,3rd....day
Winner Orbit: The Melnor will not allow a watering in the morning and afternoon without watering at night. Watering at night is bad because it leads to mold especially for new seed.
Orbit: Comes with 2 hose controls but allows 2 more if purchased
Winnder Melnor: comes with 4 right our the box.
Ease of programming: Melnor. Orbit takes a bit of thinking for it to happen.
Orbit: water valves are those brass 4 way ones. They are brass, separate and if they break are easily replaced. Downside is that mine broke 2 years in a row.
Melnor: plastic easier to set up and the valves were easier to turn on/off
Winner Melnor: neater, easier to setup and easier to use
So if you have to choose between the two then choose on the programming. If that does not matter then get the Melnor.
