June 2, 2020 Review: The cost is very high for what it is. Unit seems to have a very short WiFi range, literally 10's of feet it seems, and then has problems reconnecting even when brought right next to the wireless router. As someone who does a lot of high-tech electrical engineering for a living, my guess is the SOC they are using doesn't have it's RF pin connected properly to any type of decent antenna (more likely not connected to anything at all), but I'm not about to void the warranty just to take it apart to look. So I've found that I need to have an access point (actually a mesh node in my case) pretty much dedicated to this. Given what the margins must be on this unit, they can afford to add an RJ45 connector so one can just connect it to the network with an ethernet cable. July 9, 2020 Update: Unit lost WiFi while on vacation and stopped working, so the cat went unfed. The unit got itself not just disconnected from the WiFi, but it crashed where even pushing the manual feed button didn't work. Fortunately a neighbor was checking on the cat twice a week. The unreliable WiFi connectivity that I and a lot of customers report is exacerbated by the backup batteries in that I could not simply tell the neighbor to unplug & plug the unit back in to cold boot it. The solution was to take out the backup batteries and put the power supply on a timer that cut power to the feeder once every 24 hours. That forced a cold boot so the unit could re-establish WiFi connectivity, since it can't do that on it's own. Upon my return from vacation, my experiments with the unit indicate it loses WiFi and hangs within 36 hours of a cold boot. Overall this is a poorly designed and/or poorly manufactured unit. (i.e. Even if my unit is anomalous, a decent QA program would not have allowed it out of the factory.)
