LG Dropped the Ball Massively Here.
I work with a wireless retailer and have an opportunity to try all sorts of wireless products. I currently own a pair of Infinims for myself, (HBS-910) and was very excited when I saw the 920 model was released. I eagerly purchased these and connected them. Like all of the other modes, connecting was the same simple process. No problem! Firstly, the shape and design of the 920 is a bit unorthodox. I found the headphones much more difficult to grab out of their sockets and place back into than the previous models. The 920 is very sturdy, and almost worries me when I stretch them around my neck out of the box, however this may loosen up as others in the past have after some use. The 920 fits much more snugly, as it lays in a less rounded path around your neck (or under your collar like I wear mine). It wasn't any more or less uncomfortable, and still yet I was excited to use these. Next, audio was great. Bluetooth 4.2 shines here and I enjoyed the music quality very much, and the earpieces do a great job with bringing clarity to your music even with high levels of bass. With the Tone Bass option on, you can feel the bass hit in your ear, and I have to admit I definitely liked this. Speaking of which, the tone adjustments on the back of the earpieces. My first concern was whether these would be easily knocked or twisted out of place, as you grab the knob to place the earpieces in your ear. This issue was almost inverted, as they are actually pretty difficult to twist, having little surface area, and being stiff enough you would have to hold the rest of the earpiece in place to twist the knob. I was a bit confused on the function of this knob, as it wasn't explained much in the manual or on the box, showing an arrow to the right for "on" and left for "off," seems like it would be straight forward, but the thing is that there is a lot of travel between full left and full right, making you think "is this a fader? Is halfway lowering the bass a bit, but not turning the Tone Bass feature OFF?" I didn't get a chance to figure this out, though, as I was taken by surprise by the next point I'll make. The greatest failure in this model is BY FAR its call quality and to be specific, its noise cancelation (or COMPLETE LACK OF). Despite the little tiffs I have with the design of this headset, I would be a happy owner of these still if it weren't for this problem. The 920 has HORRENDOUS noise cancellation. I work in wireless, as I stated, and I am constantly on my phone. I talk on it while I have a busy store full of people, while I drive on a hot summer day in a vehicle that is pretty loud, and on occasion, with my window down. The days that I used this headset, I could NOT talk on the phone in any other environment than a quiet room. In contrast, the 910 is incredible. Just amazing. I can cruise at 70mph on the highway with all four windows down and hold a conversation without anyone asking "I can't hear you, are you driving?" At first, I thought there must be some setting that was turned off, unenabling the noise cancelation features of the headset. I read the entire manual and found no such thing. However, I wanted to be thorough, so I connected both headsets to my phone and on the same stretch of road, same speed and with windows down, I called a variety of people. I asked them to rate the difference between each headset in audibility on a scale of one to ten in terms of improvement. 0 being no improvement and 10 being the largest difference imaginable. The unanimous feedback was that my older, more affordable 910 had an 8 out of 10 improvement over the audibility of the 920 at 35mph and windows down. TO SUMMARIZE, the 920 is a would-have-been awesome headset. Great audio was enjoyable, and will make people who want a device that does one thing extremely well (audio) very happy, but a series of fumbles by LG have made this premium headset feel more like a glorified LG Tone Pro from 2014 with some nice speaker technology. These are an impossible headset to own for someone who does business or talks to family frequently through their headset. You are MUCH better suited to get the 910. The audio difference is only marginal, and everything in the HBS-910 is done exceptionally well, in my opinion. I will eagerly await the 930 model and demo it before buying to avoid this same experience. HOPE THIS HELPS.
