Planned Obsolescence
It was fine until they "upgraded" the filter replacements. The new replacements (same size, bought from Amazon just like I've done with all my past replacements) will not fit properly. The back panel has to be forced shut and is clearly going to break eventually due to the amount of pressure it is now necessary to place on the plastic tab on top when removing the panel. Old filter still fits perfectly, I tried reinstalling the new one twice and it doesn't fit properly. Others have mentioned the same issue in filter reviews. The filter reset button no longer works after putting in the new filter, so the unit beeps every time it is turned on now. Even better, the unit will start beeping randomly at other times while it's been running for a while and the "Filter Reset" notification will pop up. Of course, pushing the filter reset button does nothing to stop this. So, this purifier is great if you need a 2nd alarm clock waking you up randomly in the middle of the night.
As far as I'm concerned, this was an intentional move by an unethical company in order to force customers with units a couple years old to buy a new purifier. I will be buying a new purifier at some point, but from one of Germ Guardian's competitors. They can say goodbye to the money I've been giving them for overpriced filter replacements.
