Died after 11 months
I am a tradesman and put this saw to some pretty good use for the past 11 months. The good: it has been excellent as a corded saw, and loses no noticeable power using batteries only. I have used it to work in areas that did not have power, and it is much better than hauling around a generator. Tho I haven't counted, I would bet I get 150+ cuts on 2x4 lumber. Accurate, easy to adjust, works great with the matching dewalt stand. The Bad: it is really heavy compared to other miter saws. Some of that is just the overall size of every 12" sliding miters. At any rate, the battery units add weight and height to the machine. The Really bad: it started tripping breakers. Not just random job site outlets. It would even trip the 20amp GFCI in my garage, and sometimes trip the panel breaker too. After a couple weeks of that, it would only make 1 cut, then require me to unplug it, and plug it back in. Then it worked for 1 cut. That cut could be 10 minutes long, but once I walked away from the saw, there was some internal electric problem that wouldn't let it start again without a re-plugging. Fortunately it's still under the 1 year warranty (really just 1 year for an $800 saw?). I called dewalt and they said they did not have any reports like this one. They gave me the option of shipping to a dewalt repair shop, and they would pay the cost, I would only have to box it up and drop it at UPS. OR take it to the local authorized warranty repair shop. I took it to the local tool repair shop, who lamented the quality of tools these days, and said they would look at it, but probably end up sending to the dewalt center 100 miles away. Time of repair is entirely unknown, probably months. Had to go buy another saw in the meantime. It's a good bet dewalt isn't going to cover that additional cost. Another contractor commented to me that he had the same saw for less than 2 years and it died a similar death, so he just threw it away. I am dissappointed. This was part of my big tool upgrade, after 15 years of using the same tools. The saw was pretty flawless when it worked, but I have to be able to trust my tools. I'll update when I find out what the resolution is. So far the Dewalt response has been encouraging. October update: The saw has been in the shop for 5 months with no resolution yet. They have not been able to identify the problem and had to send it to the DeWalt center for further evaluation.
