Thorough analysis
Like many people, this product was recommended by a plumber who snaked our main line, as a way to continue cleaning the drains and prevent future build-ups. I purchased it right away and also watched Bio-Clean's own video. Impressive. You mean this stuff crawls all over your drains, eating up everything in sight but the pipe itself? Perfect, right? This truly seemed like the perfect drain solution and was safe to use.
I started the recommended treatments, got 2 days in, and came to a realization - how would I actually know this was doing anything, apart from NOT having another clog some years down the road? That wasn't good enough for me, so I decided to look up videos of this product in action. Surely people had tested it before, right? Surprisingly few - and of those, I think they were all, again, plumbing companies who sell the product or the manufacturer. The only apparently useful video was of cat food being dissolved. Which is great, except most drains aren't full of cat food. I wanted something more. So I conducted my own test.
Attached is a photo of some more common drain build-up offenders: Hair, a dab of bacon grease, and some butter (all of which this product claims to get rid of). Now these aren't just ordinary hair, bacon grease and butter in the photo. These are hair, bacon grease and butter after they have been soaking in a bucket of Bio-Clean for FIVE DAYS (started with warm water per the recommendations). Surprisingly, they still look an awful lot like ordinary hair, bacon grease and butter. There was NO CHANGE whatsoever. No magical creepy crawlies slowly eating them up. Nothing. If your pipes have any real build-up over the years, this is not encouraging. The piece of dog food that was in the bucket with them, however DID dissolve. So, there's that. If you have accidentally spilled an entire bag of pet food into your drain and it got stuck, then I would say this as excellent product to dissolve it. Mind you, pet food is already a finely ground up product, held together by who knows what- So whatever that stuff is, this product does unbind it and turn it back into tiny little chunks. Wonderful?
I was very optimistic about Bio-Clean. With an old house and a drain that backs up from time to time, I really wanted this to work. Sadly, I now am not only skeptical, but the whole business seems incredibly shady. Why is this only sold and promoted by plumbers?
I realize there are a good number of reviews. Going through them, I'm not sure any of them can actually validate that this product did anything at all. Leaving it in a clogged drain overnight and then pouring in boiling water appears to have led to "success" for some people. However I'm not sure they realize that letting a clog sit overnight and pouring in boiling water (without Bio-Clean) is already a common remedy for many drain clogs.
Many of the positive reviews also mentioned that their lines (like mine) were snaked before using this product. How exactly do you measure success when your lines were already clear and running? I can understand giving a good review based on the description and that your lines still work... but that's really not a valid means to evaluate the product.
I think Bio-Clean is selling a dream, and with no thought to verify it, most people are content to pour this down the drain and imagine they are getting magically cleaner. I'm sure this product does something. I just have no idea what. I have no idea what it actually is, and neither do you because they don't say. I'm guessing some combination of dried fish poop and plant matter. But who knows... in my personal test, the claims of getting rid of hair and grease appear to be utterly false.
I would love for someone to do further testing with other food products, paper and cotton (the other items they claim to treat). I may find the motivation at some point and will update this review if I do, but in the meantime If I save even one person $50 by posting this review I will consider this time well spent.
Best of luck to you all in your drain cleaning adventures... I suggest you start with something other than this stuff.
