Useless for most color slides...
We tried using this scanner to archive old but precious color slides, but we were greatly disappointed. While scanner works acceptably on balanced, daytime, bright sunlight scenes, it terribly distorts the color balance and exposure on anything else (e.g. scenes shot in overcast or cloudy conditions, scenes with a wide dynamic range of shadows and highlights, indoor shots). The problem lies with the automatic exposure function and the very limited dynamic range of the scanner, and using the exposure adjust tools on the scanner was of limited use in correcting problems. Thus shadows become saturated blacks in an attempt to reduce the intensity of highlighted regions, such as sky. As a result, most of our scans looked like those old contasty postcards from the 1950's. Also, too often scans had weird artefacts, such as a blue sky scanned as yellow! Unfortunately, the digitized scans are far too compressed and limited in dynamic range to allow the correction of such problems in a high end imaging program such as Photoshop.
