iPhone 5 users beware (plus new HELPFUL info)
First of all there is a lot I really like about this thing, I am going to focus on the things I want to warn you about. If you are interested in using the AppRadio features (a big selling point for me) and you have an iPhone 5, 5c, or 5s, you will need a video connection along with the lightning/usb - either a VGA or HDMI cable PLUS an Apple VGA or Data AV to Lightning adapter. It will not work to just hook up to the USB.
The documentation about this is really, really bad. I read and figured out everything ahead of time to be sure I had it all installed correctly and didn't catch this issue until it was fully installed - now I have to pull it all out and reinstall with the extra 100.00 worth of stuff to make it do what it is supposed to. Infuriating.
On the upside, it's gorgeous, it sounds great, and the interface is intuitive and simple. But man...good luck figuring out what you actually need by reading the manual or going to the website. A joke. sincerely - the guinea pig
**IMPORTANT UPDATE**
Pioneer swears up and down that the following is very clear from their manual. It isn't. Once you install the HDMI cable and hook up the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter (or the similar setup using the VGA version) you will get a message on the screen that says "Incompatible USB". (The USB portion of the Apple adapter is charge-only, no data!) You need to go to Settings: Input/Output: Smartphone Settings: Connection: [change from USB to Digital AV or VGA]
The manual is pure crap in this regard - and also in the way that it describes the cables you need, using Pionner part numbers rather than just the type of cable. What you will need is the following.
For HDMI connection: (You DO NOT need anything special from Pioneer)
-HDMI cable
-USB extension cable plugged into USB "1" on the back of the unit
-Apple lightning USB cable (standard one)
-Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter
-iPhone 5, 5s, 5c
-AppRadio app installed on your phone
I'm not going to go into the VGA method as I didn't do it, and it seems like you may indeed need to buy their proprietary RGB/VGA cable. Why bother?
I'll post a pic of the connections if it isn't self-explanatory. I truly hope this saves someone the headaches I just had.
