Don't believe the hype
I loved John Mayer from the first time I heard "My Stupid Mouth". I even went to see his tour last summer, which was awesome. Unfortunately, however, this album is a crushing disappointment.
Gone are the thoughtful, or sardonic, or whimsical lyrics. They have been replaced by psycho-babble and sugar-coated garbage. Gone are the cutting, driving guitar riffs, replaced by forgettable electric nothings. Even John's languid, smokey voice has lost its sincerity. Given his previous work, I can only say what I say far too often about music these days - this album was rushed out onto the shelves to capitalize on John's recent success, perhaps against even his own wishes. And the worst part is, the album is so poor it's unlikely to generate more than two singles, the number of good songs on the album. The rest is typical, unmemorable pop confection, and you are doing yourself a favor if you skip this album, *especially* if you love John Mayer for his music. Then you won't be as discouraged as I am.
[EDIT] It's unfortunate that people almost always read the "Was this review helpful to you?" vote as "Do you agree with this review?" instead of its intention, which is "Is this a well-written review?".
