I opened an Amazon Prime Chase Visa card almost from the day Amazon signed the agreement with Chase Bank. Since that time I have ever put between $500 and $1,000 a month on that card through Amazon. I have never had any problems with Chase Bank until now. I usually pay my monthly bill in full. Once or twice, I have split the payment in half, always making sure to pay at least the minimum (usually more), and always making up the difference the following month. All of a sudden this month, Chase started to decline payments on my card because they said I was $57 and change past due. 57 dollars! Can you believe it? After God knows how many years! An account in good standing, with no black mark's against it, and a credit rating that varies between, 750 and 800 depending on current debt and number of open accounts. I don't know how the amount in arrears came to exist. Maybe they ran a credit check on someone else with a similar name and a poor credit rating, or maybe the Chase software just automatically suspends accounts if it shows any past due amount, without any one bothering to glance at the condition in which the account has been maintained. If that's the case, it is among the worst business decisions I've seen in a long time. In any case, while the person I talked to was pleasant enough, I could not get any satisfaction from the bank. The bank was unwilling to waive the suspension pending receipt of the next payment. If Chase is willing to lose an old and established account with no history of late payments over a single instance like this, I'm willing to oblige them. The next payment is due in two weeks. It will be the last payment I ever make to Chase. I will be switching my Amazon default payment method to another card, one managed by a more reputable bank.
