Have a ladder and a hammer ready
So after reading through the reviews and understanding that these are "first generation" technology I decided that FirstAlert was a name-brand company and I would trust them. I bought two units and spent a frustrating three hours installing them (which was longer than I had hoped) and then over the course of the next nine months I suffered through a series of strange network issues. First I couldn't see the devices on the network, then they wouldn't respond. All-in-all I wasn't seeing any benefit from their HomeKit features but I figured having a modern smoke detector with a carbon monoxide sensor at least my family is safe. That was until the units started failing. So when one unit fails it triggers all seven other smoke detectors in the house, so over a single week my family was woken up three times (always between the hours of 1am and 4am) to screeching alarms. After evacuating everyone and ensuring there wasn't actually a fire (or CO leak) I would then spend seemingly forever trying to get the units to shut-up. This is when the intermittent wireless connectivity (both wifi and Bluetooth) really became a liability. My house has vaulted ceilings so with the alarms in the entire house blaring for over a half-hour I brought a ladder out from the garage and proceeded to go to each smoke detector to try and silence it. On the third and final night this happened I was unable to disable the alarms. Finally I was at my wits end (and almost deaf) I unplugged the two First Alert Onelink units and while the rest of the normal smoke detectors in the house when silent the two Onelink units continued to wail on. One of them finally responded to me tapping on it and was sciences but the other continued on despite everything I tried. Searching google I found there was a way to deplete the battery by flipping a hidden switch on the back of the unit. I figured I needed my hearing and sanity back (and I just wanted to get some sleep) so I flipped that and though "oh well I'll call support in the morning". Then the switch did nothing. 3 minutes when by and nothing had happened, the unit was still wailing on and now I was noticing my neighbors were starting to wake up (probably wondering if we had succumb to smoke inhalation). That's when the hammer came into play. It was the only method I had to silence the unit. To First Alerts credit, the OneLink device is very durable. It took several very hard blows to actually silence the unit. I'm now a Nest customer.
