DO NOT BUY THIS GATE. We did everything correctly to install this gate at the top of the stairs, and the gate lock on the gate failed, causing my 16-month-old son to fall down four stairs onto the landing. Thank god there was a landing for him to fall onto, instead of a full flight of stairs. I was just downstairs, and my husband had been upstairs with him. This happened so quickly and not because we'd left him alone! He's quite the curious and strong kiddo, so even though we had the door swing inward, rather than push outward as an extra precaution, he still managed to open the gate and tumble down the stairs. The lock on this works sometimes but not other times. I have no idea what causes the lock to fail, but it is extremely dangerous. Our baby boy could be dead right now because of this faulty gate. Obviously not every single gate is faulty, since there are so many positive reviews, but honestly, do you want to put your child at risk of serious injury or death? DON'T DO IT! I am thankful my son only suffered a scratched and bruised eyelid. It could have been so much worse.
