When it works, it works great. When it doesn't, it's a nightmare
I got a roll of this to cover south facing patio doors from a local hardware store. Watched the videos on the website, followed all of the instructions exactly and used the suggested equipment. It worked WONDERFULLY! Stopped turning the room into an oven and looked great. Loved it so much I ordered enough to do every other window in the house. The second batch is what I ordered on Amazon. It's like completely different stuff. It's like 5 stars for the first roll vs 1 star for all the others.
Problem #1: First I did some really large doors, so going to smaller windows shouldn't have been a problem. Except it was. Part way through the first application of the new batch, I ran out of window film solution. The website tells you to make refill solution using a 1/2 cap baby shampoo and 1 qt distilled water. I used Johnson & Johnson No More Tears baby shampoo. THE baby shampoo. It didn't smooth quite as easily, but I got it smooth and trimmed and then a couple of hours later this weird texture showed up (picture attached). Not dirt, but water droplets. I tried again, using different sized squeegees and fiddled with the water:shampoo ratio. Every time it happened. Got more official Gila solution, used that on the same film: less of a problem, but still had the texture issues. I don't understand why this method worked perfectly before but now does not.
Problem #2: Not all of the film is usable. The center of the roll is bent in the opposite direction and creased on all the tubes I received. The start of the roll has a sticker on it applied directly to the film side that does NOT come off (see picture). I lost about 12" of film off each roll because of these two things. 12" isn't a lot, but for me it was the difference between getting 3 windows done/roll and 2 windows/roll, making covering all my windows 33% more expensive. Edges are also damaged to varying amounts on different rolls, making some edges unusable and needing a further 1-2" trimmed from the width.
I've used 4 rolls to do 2 windows, and I don't even like how they came out. They're just 'passable' now, not nice like the patio doors. I'll probably just return the remaining rolls.
