Bird owners beware! We went to the vet last night and had to put our sweet new baby parakeet down. We've had her for 5 days and the cage for 3 days. We were all still getting used to our new environment but she has been hand fed since a baby (now 2 months old) and used to people. She flew to her cage from my finger and landed on the outside of her cage, I opened the door to let her climb in. When I went to get her a few minutes later, I saw a red spot on her lower belly. She was bleeding! I looked at her closer and it was getting worse. We rushed to the vet and the vet said she had a pretty severe cut and would need surgery to repair the cut and even with that they couldn't guarantee that she would pull thru. What?!?!?! My 2 boys 10 and 4 were with us and they were devastated. When I got home I searched all the areas she was near playing and then I saw it - on the outside of the cage on the vertical bar that closes the large doors on top and bottom are 2 sets of wires that hold the bar in place on each door. The wires jut out on the outside of the cage and are extremely sharp! A bird flying to the outside of the cage can get cut. I know this is a freak accident and the chances of this are probably very slim, but IT HAPPENED TO US! We are devastated and I wanted to share our story. This cage is going in the trash - I don't even want to return it.
