Should have listened to other reviewers...High pitch whining noise
I was reluctant to purchase but after reading the reviews it seemed like the noise issue may have been resolved, but apparently not. It would seem the old, defective models are still in circulation. Or maybe my noise issue is a different problem. My 1500VA unit was purchased on 07/29/2018. It was received on 07/31/2018. The quality check ticket taped to my unit was from March of 2018. My serial # starts 3B1813XXXXXX. My issue is a constant high pitch whine sound. It sounds like a transformer issue, perhaps due to un-insulated coils and/or cheap capacitors to save on costs. When the LCD is on, the frequency of the whine increases and becomes even louder. I chatted with APC tech support for a bit this afternoon about the problem and they told me to follow some instructions to reset the unit and charge it for 16 hours before plugging anything else into it. I knew when they said that that they don't quite understand the problem or that they know exactly what the problem is and are not admitting it to deter/delay replacement. Basically they are giving me the run-around and I imagine doing this to many customers will have some sort of net gain on their part, so, I get why they do it from a business standpoint. I suppose I will entertain the idea and do as they ask but I am not expecting it to solve the issue. Regardless of what happens with my particular situation, (refund, replacement, etc.) I would beg the question does one really want to take the risk of getting an old unit and having to go through this time-consuming process? I just wanted to plug it in and be done with it. I wish I had not took the risk on the fancier, more expensive, pro sine-wave model. This was my first APC purchase and I can't say I will be a return customer for APC.
