Shallow Drivel for the Privileged
I wanted to like this book, I really did. It is the group read of the year for an organization I am in, so I figured it must be worth while. Not so much. Some of her points were so spot on (starting with small goals, the idea of “I should be further along by now”) and others fell completely flat. I found the “Things that helped me” section at the end of each chapter to be annoying and basically just humble brags about her own life. Or worse yet, another pitch for going to therapy. I’m pretty sure this woman eats, breathes, and goes to therapy. This book was a jumble of white upper class privilege mixed with all the “horrible” (read, she drank two glasses of wine per night! Oh my!) things she had done in her Christian view with a side of social media guru giving ill-informed health and diet advice. If I could sum this book up in one word, it would be: shallow. But since she said as much in the book, she doesn’t care what anybody thinks. She’s going to continue to write drivel for the joy of it. We just shouldn’t buy it.
