I felt like a cog in her marketing machine
I bought this book at the recommendation of a friend, but I was highly disappointed. I also started Marie's online course associated with the book, but I didn't finish it. The book and course were not entirely a waste of time, but for me, there are many better resources for learning how to overcome my life's challenges.
As background, I should start by saying that I read A LOT of self help and psychology books. I've been reading self help books "for fun" for over 20 years. I've always got one or two self help books that I'm reading at any given time. If this is one of the first books of this type you've read, you might get a lot out of it. For that reason, I'm not suggesting that it won't be right for you. Based on the other reviews, this book worked for lots of people, so maybe it will work for you, too.
I have mainly two gripes with the book (and course):
1) Most of the material is rehashed from other material I've read or heard. Although it was packaged professionally and certainly marketed well, the ideas were not new and did not significantly help me. The stories were so-so, she kept telling us how she was the valedictorian of her class, and if I heard "according to research" one more time, I thought I might puke. It wasn't a particularly engaging book and it felt rather self serving to me.
2) I felt manipulated by the author. Essentially, she suggested that we repeat the title of her book over and over again. Why that and not "I can figure this out" or "This problem has a solution" or something else? Perhaps it's just a "coincidence" but if you repeat her mantra over and over again, you're going to remember it, right? And, of course, you'll start telling other people about it. She has created a little marketing machine out of YOU. I admit that the idea is genius but I don't want to be part of her marketing machine. I resented being sucked in as her lackey under the guise of giving me help.
Use your own judgement about whether to buy this book or not. Maybe it will help you. My only caution is to be aware that you are a cog in her marketing machine. If you're OK with that, then this book might be right for you.
