The author was once a school teacher, but you wouldn't know it from reading this book.
The lesson learned from reading this story:
Sometimes, kindness means leaving an honest review so that others don't make the same mistake that you've made.
I guess the best place to start is by noting that this book arrived to my home damaged. Secondly, there is nothing in this book which would cause any elementary school-aged child to contemplate what kindness means as a character trait. I say this because the entire book reads as though the author is orating a story on the spot, complete with grammatical errors, missing words, and poor sentence structure. Additionally, the plot lacks substance, creativity, and despite what the title implies, there really isn't any element of 'adventure'. There are two dogs and each receives their own bone; one eats theirs right away and the other does not. Then, one dog is clearly the hero because they share the bone that they stashed away for "safekeeping"... The end.
Lastly, it would appear as though it was never proof-read or reviewed by an editor, as there are several errors with regard to spelling and punctuation.
On the bright side, my second grader is a dog lover and she did say that she enjoyed the story and the illustrations, however the font made it difficult for her to decipher certain words which have not been difficult for her to read in the past.
All in all, I wouldn't buy this book again and this damaged copy is going back. However, I will be making a separate donation to a pediatric cancer non-profit, as the foreword indicates that the proceeds from sales of this book will go to benefit pediatric cancer research. It would have been helpful for the author to have listed the name of the non-profit in the foreword, but again, while the intent behind this book was noble, it was poorly planned and poorly executed.
