Thoughtlessly-Designed Packaging and Disc Play Commands
The packaging and the disc programming must be designed by people who really don't watch TV series on DVD and thus cannot anticipate even basic expectations of their customers. Packaging: the box is annoying because instead of the usual orientation, the DVD booklets go in face-to-front, two abreast, then there is a top cover over everything. The set either doesn't fit, or takes up too much space, on a DVD shelf. To pull out a booklet is a big operation, and all the pieces (box, top, and the booklet in use) wind up getting left strewn around.
Disc programming: No Play All command in earlier seasons. Worse: Choosing an episode doesn't play it yet; it leads you to another interface first. Worse yet: at the end of an episode, the disc doesn't advance to the next episode, but re-sets to the opening interface for the episode just played. All in all, to progress from the last episode to the next, you need to make about 4 clicks (with pauses) instead of none. Don't they understand that people buy these sets so they can watch multiple episodes in a row? However, this design was corrected midway through the seasons.
Further update: Having now watched nine seasons, I can confirm that most of the stories are ingenious and the characters evoke our empathy. But a new quibble has emerged. While Emily Deschanel has many fans, when you watch more than one episode at a time, her voice and delivery become annoying - ponderous, self-important, with the curious tic of repeating or stretching vowel sounds every few words. Example: "Now that he's ba-ack, his pa-ast is catching u-up." Several of the other actors have caught the same tendency.
