One Big Humblebrag
I'm part of a Women's book club, and I chose this book for our January 2016 selection. My thought: What a great, inspiring way to start off the new year! Women inspiring women! Women breaking through glass ceilings! Wow, did I make a mistake!
Now I'm pausing my reading (I'm 3/4 way through) to write this review just to vent my regret and embarrassment. This book is just one long humblebrag. It is so casually written as to be insulting. What is supposed to be sassy, lighthearted and funny comes off as lazy and REPETITIVE. Good lord, so repetitive. Here's an example:
"I once accidentally flung a chicken bone across the room at a very elegant cocktail party while trying to make a point.
Did you hear me?
I FLUNG A CHICKEN BONE ACROSS THE ROOM AT A COCKTAIL PARTY."
Yes I heard you! Plus, the words are still there on the page. I can refer back to those, thanks!
Her formula seems to be: Make a statement. Ask a question. REPEAT STATEMENT IN CAPS. Maybe repeat again in italics.
She's also constantly bragging: "I look so young" (I've seen her. I don't see it.) "I'm so funny" (Who says this?) "I tell great stories" (Then please, tell me one!)
Her best writing arrives when she talks her characters, especially Christina. But Shonda writing about herself? She seems very much disconnected from her own being, which becomes increasingly concerning. When she starts writing about her own life there is talk of disassociating, blacking out, spacing out, and drinking (lots of drinking!). I keep waiting for some kind of heart felt introspection, exploration, into what seems to be serious (and far more interesting) issues -- but there is nothing. To quote another reviewers spot on assessment:
"she doesn't seem to share much of herself, despite the conversational, confessional girl-talk voice she adopts in an attempt to disguise how little she actually reveals."
Finally, closing my rant with what I think might be Shonda's most honest sentences:
"I know that I certainly tried to project the idea that my life was perfect. And I tried not to think about it too hard."
Apparently! Shonda seems like the type of person who earnestly says that her biggest vice is "being a perfectionist", while she pours out her 5th glass of wine.
P.S. Excuse me if this review sounds too rage-y. This is probably the angriest one I've ever written. It's just that, not only do I feel that I wasted my money, but I wasted the money of 6 of my girlfriends. Don't let this happen to you! :'(
