Beware of Exploding Pie Plates
Pyrex Easy Grab Glass Pie Plate, 9 inch, 2 Pack I was totally caught off guard Thanksgiving Day when one of the two Pyrex Pie Plates exploded in my oven ruining not only the pie it was holding but also the one below it with glass shards. There were at least 50 pieces of glass inside of my oven that had to be cleaned out. This not only ruined my completely made from scratch pumpkin pies, but having to clean the glass shards out of the oven threw off the rest of the day's cooking as well. See attached picture.
This was only the second time that I had used these pie plates and was initially very pleased with them after the first usage. The second time however, both pie plates had been in the oven for over 40 minutes when I heard a "pop". Much to my dismay, I found that the top pie pan had not just cracked or split but actually exploded inside the oven. My family has happily used Pyrex products for decades and I have never seen anything like this before. I have heard that a Pyrex container could "crack or split" if it was placed quickly from one extreme temperature to another, but this pie plate had been in the oven for over 40 minutes. Since the Pie Plate didn't just crack or split but actually exploded, I chose to throw the second one out as well since I did not want to risk a repeat of my Thanksgiving experience.
