★★☆☆☆
Unremarkable performance for a remarkable price
The good: the fan IS actually really quiet. The bad: it doesn't move a large volume of air RELATIVE TO IT'S SIZE.The cage rusts. The ugly; overpriced and use of plastic for mission-critical wear parts UPDATED REVIEW AFTER A SUMMER OF USE: I purchased this fan in the hope that high price would equate with high quality and durability. Unfortunately in the case of this Rowenta fan, price wasn't a good indicator of quality or effectiveness. Chinese quality with Rowenta's German pricing provides questionable value. Air movement is not exceptional; even in "Turbo" mode. (My thirty year old 12" Panasonic puts out more air volume than this 16" Rowenta). I appreciate that it's quiet as Rowenta's blade design prioritizes low noise over air movement. If low noise is your highest priority, this fan could be a great choice despite its shortcomings. Build quality is my biggest concern. Plastic construction of mission-critical mechanical components will likely consign this fan to the dust bin within a couple of years of use. I uploaded a customer photo of the flimsy integral plastic clamp that attaches the two halves of the fan cage together that ISN'T EVEN SHOWN in Rowenta's product photography. Cheap plating of the steel cage turns into rust quickly. That's right - RUST! Removing the fan housing for routine cleaning requires you unscrew a Philips screw threaded into a plastic boss and then snap open a plastic locking clamp. Review the photo and advise: How many cycles do you think this flimsy plastic clamp will endure before it fractures, the cage can no longer be retained and the fan becomes a boat anchor? Sorry but this is not a robust, durable design. The fact that this flimsy plastic cage clamp has been eliminated from Rowenta's product photography is telling. Plastic used for critical mechanical parts is always a bad idea and a key element of planned obsolescence. If Rowenta had confidence their product was robust they might be inclined to provide extended warranty coverage, however; the U.S. and Canada receive a one year warranty while Rowenta provides the rest of the world with a two year warranty. I would ordinarily have given the Rowenta three stars overall, but I dinged it one star based on being $60+ overpriced in my assessment (it was $130 when I bought it). If Rowenta were to lower the price to $70 and re-engineer the cheesy plastic cage clamp contraption they would have a five-star product in my view. The fan includes a large, simple remote that controls fan speed, but unlike most full-featured fan remotes, oscillation can only be set on the Rowenta with a mechanical lever on the motor body, there's no timer function, and no provision to mount the remote on the fan body for storage. In summary: A tepid endorsement for this overpriced Chinese-made plastic fan, that works well out of the box, but is unlikely to be long lasting. $50 at Walmart will buy you a similar Chinese fan that is probably made in the same factory using the same motor, however the Rowenta design is more attractive in my opinion and certainly quieter.
