Buyer beware! - These plugs are not what is advertised. The specifications on Amazon.com state that these are a polarized plug, which they are not. This is actually a two-prong non-polarized plug. Both blades on the plug measure 0.235" wide and 0.05" thick (the NEMA standard specifies that the blades be 0.06" thick). The item details on Amazon.com also state that the plug is rated for 16 Amp, but the plug itself has a rating of 10 Amp stamped on the plug. The internal connections of the plug connecting the wiring to the blade are very loose fitted compression type fittings that will heat up due to the resistance created with that poor of a connection causing a fire hazard.
The diameter of the hole in the terminal for connecting the wire to the plug is approximately 7/64" which should easily hold your standard 16 and 18 gauge stranded wire.
One other item to note is that the plug does not carry the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or CSA (Canadian Standards Association) stamps. This means that the product has either never been submitted to either organization for compliance and safety testing, or they were submitted and failed the required testing.
Why you should never replace a polarized plug with a non-polarized plug:
Polarized plugs work as a safety mechanism to prevent electrical shock if you touch an energized part of the appliance. Due to the design of polarized plugs (the neutral blade is wider than the live blade), they can only be plugged into a socket in one direction, which guarantees that the live conductor and the live pole on the appliance will be connected, and the neutral conductor to the neutral pole as well. In appliances with non-polarized plugs, if you were to touch a part of the appliance that was energized, the current would travel to the ground through your body, giving you an electric shock. By having the neutral conductor and pole together, the exposed parts of the appliance are connected to a ground wire, preventing the current from traveling through your body.
