Two Failures in Six Months. Hinge?
After 6 wonderful, trouble-free years of ownership of the smaller XXBOV800XL Breville Smart Oven, I decided to buy the newer BOV900BSS unit. I had been dreaming of buying this larger, feature-rich model for months. I use a Breville oven 10-15 times a week.
The new BOV900BSS unit arrived sealed from the factory in 2 days (Prime). I unboxed the unit and plugged it into the existing dedicated 20 amp outlet.
After turning on the BOV900BSS unit, the oven exhibited unexpected behavior.
(It did not work properly).
The behavior was:
0. Oven off - display dark
1. Turn to Bake.
2. Set temperature and time.
3. Press START.
4. Oven light comes on. "Pre-Heating" begins flashing. The heating coils turn on and the temperature goes up. The timer 'flashes" the time I dialed on and off. (normal)
5. A few minutes later the temperature is apparently reached an the "Preheating" indicator goes off. (normal) The Timer continues flashing (bad. The timer should stop flashing and being counting down).
6. No matter what the timer is set for, after ten minutes (timer flashing the whole time) the unit turns itself off. This occurs whether I open the door or not (the BOV900BSS has a sensor on the hinge which can start or stop the timer — my old unit did not have this hinge sensor)
Breville USA opened a ticket and offered to send me a new oven (if I would return the defective unit by printing a FedEx label and taking it to a FedEx office). I was offered two options: (1) wait 10-15 days for a new oven to be shipped AFTER the broken unit was received by Breville, or (2) give a credit card number and a new unit would be sent immediately. The credit card is not charged, but a temporary “hold” for $143 is placed on your card — which will eventually be charged if you don’t send back the old oven — fair enough).
I tell you all of this because.. it’s not an isolated issue. After 5 months, my replacement unit has failed precisely the same way (steps 0-6 above). I believe this has something to do with a sensor in the hinge.
Since the second BOV900BSS unit is also under the original 2 year warranty, Breville USA is sending me a third oven. Unfortunately I have no confidence the unit will not fail. I plan on “baby’ing the door hinge.
One failure.. I don’t worry. Two complete failures with same symptoms? I worry. If you don’t need all the fancy new features, I would buy a less complicated Breville oven. Let me know if this happened to you. Do not buy this oven refurbished. It is not worth saving a few dollars to give up your two year factory warranty (refurb units are 6 months).
The oven cooks great. I love proofing bread. I am disappointed in the air frying feature. I tried it twice (dipping frozen pirogies and later pillsbury dough in peanut oil and cooking in air-fry high fan mode). In both cases the result was hot dry food with cooking oil “blown” off the food and onto the walls of the oven. I didn’t buy it to fry so not a big deal.
