Not Keto Friendly, has soluble corn fiber added, and super expensive!
Let me start off by saying, I have a degree in nutrition and have lost 100 pounds on a low carb diet; so I know a little about what I am talking about as far as eating healthy and how to lose weight. This review was for Coco Zero bars with hazelnut. They are 1 ounce (26 grams) pee serving vs these that are 10 grams each. The ingredients are the same so this review applies. The only thing that differs is the size and the fact the other treats have hazelnuts. I know a lot of chocoholics will hate me for criticizing this product but this product is not Keto friendly – It has man-made Soluble Corn Fiber, it is not keto friendly, and will halt your weight loss efforts. If it does not do what it claims, why spend 4-5X more money per ounce compared to regular dark chocolate. Already 9% of the reviewers have given this product 1-2 starts like me and most of them complain that it has spiked their blood sugar and it is not keto friendly, as I have observed. Sure this product has tons of positive reviews but how many actually measured their blood sugar and ketones to see how this product is not keto friendly. Coco Zero claims that it has 15 grams of carbs per serving but 13 of those are just harmless fiber, which leaves you with only 2 net grams of carbs and they promote it as keto friendly. It has Soluble corn fiber, also known as maltodextrin and resistant maltodextrin, is used as a thickener, filler, and preservative in many packaged foods. Go to the perfectketo website and you’ll see that this fiber is not keto friendly. Let me tell you my experience. I am on a ketogenic diet. I measure my blood same time in the late afternoon every day before dinner but four-six hours after lunch. My Ketone is normally .9 to 1.1 mmol/liter. This is a nice moderate state of ketosis. My blood sugar is in the 70’s or 80’s. On this particular day I had 6 ounces of grilled fish with some arugula for lunch, a nice low carb lunch. I decided to finish my meal with these Coco Zero treats. Pretty tasty I must say. Four hours later (before dinner) I measured my blood sugar and ketones like I do every day. My blood sugar was still high at 101 and my ketones were down to .2mmol/liter. This 1ounce treat threw me out ketosis; I could not believe it. I decided to double down. I skipped dinner but had 2 servings of the 1 ounce Coco Zero treat. 4 hours more went by and my blood sugar was still at 115! I could have had a salad, veggies, and a protein and my blood sugar would have been below 90 after four hours. This spike in blood sugar and the drop-in ketones is not commensurate to a 2-4 grams ingestion of carbs. It was more like consuming 30 grams of pure sugar. I complained to Coco Zero and they responded with a bunch of excuses. “I must be in the small percentage that has an allergic reaction to soluble corn fiber, or maybe I just had too many carbs that day, or maybe I just happen to be a type 1 diabetic….” The seller also added that they never said it won’t raise your blood sugar on their item description. In actuality they did because that is what keto friendly means. Again, please don’t believe anything I said – get yourself a glucose and ketone blood measuring kit from Amazon for $40 and see for yourself whether this product spikes your insulin and throws you out of ketosis. If you are losing weight even though you are consuming this treat, think how much more you can lose without it. Please leave comments on my review with your observations. If you see Coco Zero has an adverse effect on your blood sugar, your ketogenic diet, and your weight loss effort then complain and ask that the seller change their misleading description and claims.
