Wanted to love it but if the data is bad, what is the point?
I really wanted to love this. Have been waiting for it for a while and felt lucky to get one from Brookstone who for whatever reason had em for sale in December when everyone else was waiting for stock.
It has some redeeming features, not least of which is the text notifications, unfortunately it only works 50% of the time even my phone is in my pocket.
Battery life is good.
Silent alarm is strong and works great.
Here's the problem. The data is completely unreliable. I've been experimenting with fitness trackers and heart rate monitors. Today I wore a heartbeat monitor, the surge, and the basis peak during my weight routine. (OCD, yes)
Heart rate on the Fitbit Surge never exceeded 94 BPM. The HR monitor was steady between 129-134 most of the time. The Basis struggles a bit to lock on and takes an average of several seconds but was very close when it did display heart rate.
The Surge jumped between 74 - 94 and was sadly, just never accurate.
On to steps. I don't think that either the basis or surge are super accurate but I'll say that while the Basis seemed a bit low to me at first. The Surge logged 500 steps during my 2 mile motorcycle ride home. It also counted 18 floors stepped out when I never walked a single floor today. Maybe it calculates height on my elevator ride to and from the ground floor to my office.
On to sleep. The sleep tracker on the surge is the same basic tracker based on movement/time that you get with the Flex. Basis is a clear winner here.
So net net, I'm disappointed. Can't trust the HR monitor, steps are drastically inflated by driving, doing dishes, even sitting on couch clicking the remote seems to count 40-50 steps. Give me stair credit when I didn't earn it. I just can't give it a good review. It gives me a false sense of achievement when I don't deserve it and when I do do a work out, the HR monitor never crosses the active HR threshold.
Maybe a software update will fix it? I'll give it 'til the return window expires. Maybe a firmware update will help.
