don't count on this product nor the warranty
I'm the quartermaster of a Boy Scout troop and we've taken several of these on backpacking trips where several of them broke. The problem is the hose coupling at the inlet of the pump. I've had two break off and one simply pop out. While the breakages may have been from careless usage, the coupling sticks out far enough to sustain damage too easily. On the one where the coupling actually came loose from the pump and popped out, Katadyn does not recommend that glue be used to re-affix it because the glue you use might not be food grade. In their manufacturing process, they weld this part in. Well, since the coupling came out when it's supposed to be permanently attached, wouldn't you think it is covered under the warranty? It is, but only for 90 days. We were out of luck.
Additionally, we've had filters that have clogged after two uses and one broken handle.
The Hiker Pro is NOT reliable.
During those same trips where we had problems with the Katadyns, some of the Scouts brought MSR water filters. They held up much better with no breakages and their ceramic filter elements can be scrubbed clean when they get clogged. Not so with the Katadyn pleated filter elements.
